How to Convert Physical Machine to Virtual Infrastructure

In this article, we will learn how to convert physical machine to Virtual Infrastructure using a VMware converter. I will provide guidelines for converting a physical PC into a virtual machine, so you can utilize it in VMware Infrastructure, Workstation, Fusion, or Player. VMware Converter is a free tool that can be installed on your physical computer running the Windows operating system. The VMware Converter standard converts the data on the hard disk into a virtual disk (named .vmdk), which you can use in other VMware infrastructure. This processor does not affect your system, and you can continue to work on your computer after using the converter.

Convert Linux or Windows PC (Physical or Virtual)

If you have an old operating system (Windows or Linux) sitting around on defective hardware, for any reason, you are unable to upgrade the operating system. It’s time to virtualize your old operating system. You can download vCenter converter and then install VMware vCenter Converter Standard, and you can convert your old Windows or Linux computers.

Windows Host Prerequisites

Before we can start and try to start virtualizing the old Windows machine, first you must ensure the Windows computer you want to convert to a virtual machine meets a few prerequisites.
The old Windows computer runs a supported operating system.
Disable the Windows firewall.

Convert physical machine to Virtual Infrastructure

Open the VMware vCenter converter standard and then choose the Convert Machine tab.

Choose the source type powered on, and then select this local machine.
Click on View source details.

Select the destination type for the VMware Infrastructure virtual machine.
Enter the “VMware Infrastructure server details” and then choose next.

Type a unique name for the virtual machine, and then choose a destination virtual machine datacenter. Click next.

On the Destination Locations page, select an ESXi host and then choose the datastore where you need to save your virtual machine.
Choose a virtual machine version, and then click next.

On the conversion options interface, under Data to Copy, choose to edit.
Change the destination size to the minimum size.
Under the Devices option, select edit on the memory tab, change the ram allocation to the recommended value, and then choose next.
